Whale Watching

Each year spanning about three months, hundreds of humpback whales travel through the warm Turks and Caicos Islands waters. These stunning animals follow an annual migration path from their summer feeding grounds in the northern polar waters to their winter breeding grounds in the south.

Between February and April they can often be spotted swimming inside the Turks Island Passage which separates the Turks Islands and the Caicos Islands. They use this route to head towards the Silver Bank north of the Dominican Republic where they give birth, before returning north with their calves. Adult humpback whales are very distinctive with their dark stocky bodies, long white pectoral fins and bumpy heads – they range in length from 39 to 52ft and weigh about 79,000lbs. They can often be seen breaching high into the air and slapping the water with their long tails – an incredible sight for whale watchers. In addition snorkelers and divers will often be able to hear the distinctive whale song from miles away in a stunning vocal display which can last up to 20 minutes.

Some of the best places to spot these magnificent mammals are off the islands of Grand Turk and Salt Cay – both accessible from Providenciales via a short plane ride.
